Yep, most kids look forward to summer’s change of pace…less time in the classroom and more time in the swimming pool. It’s a chance to back off the dogged schedule of being up and out early to school, only to come home in the late afternoon to face a pile of homework too. I’ve heard more than one cheer go up from some of our youth about wrapping up their studies for the summer break.
Summer brings a change for our ministry activities as well.
Our Half Time Dinner crew gets a well-deserved break (they served more than 160 at our last midweek gathering!).
Our regular Wednesday evening program of AWANA, youth, and adult fellowship and study groups go offline as well.
The plan is for a season of rest where families have increased opportunities to get away together and for our kids to take part in VBS, camps and other special summer activities. It’s a great change of pace for everyone, including our ministry leaders who need time to be refreshed with their families too.
That being said, we don’t want the relaxed summer schedule to be so loose that some start feeling lost without our great midweek Half Time connection. I know that some of you might feel that way, particularly if you don’t have a lot of family around. So, here are a few reminders and suggestions for staying in touch and taking advantage of relaxing and growth opportunities during our summer months.
Start a new tradition of making it to the Sunday School learning hour at 9:00am on Sunday mornings. If you do you will find a fellowship group for every age and stage of your family that shares prayer needs as well as challenges you to grow in your knowledge and application of God’s Word.
Men, check out one of our men’s fellowship and Bible Study breakfasts. It’s a great way to get the fuel and encouragement you need to start your day. Tuesdays in Faith Hall at 7AM or Wednesdays in Pacific Grove (512 12th St) at 6:30 AM. Rise and shine J.
Women, though our regular women’s groups take a break for the summer, take this opportunity to make one new friend. Invite another woman you’ve met for the first time this year to join you for a cup of coffee, purely for the joy of sharing your lives and encouraging each other in your walk with Christ. See what God might be pleased to grow out of that simple connection together.
Moms and Dads of preschool through elementary schoolers, circle July 17th on your calendar for a fun early afternoon of ice cream sundaes, slip and slides and poolside activities. Bring your crew to church with the promise of ice cream and getting wet.
High School guys and girls, stay heads up to the special Bible and fellowship groups being formed just for the summer. Tyler and the youth team will fill you in on these. And, decide now who you are going to invite to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Event Night. It will be a fun way to introduce a friend to our Sanctuary youth family. And, don’t wait any longer to get registered for Silver Spur summer camp!
Take part in our newly forming Visitation Team, encouraging shut-ins with a friendly hello from the Sanctuary family. Parents with young children who are willing to be a part of this team will be a special delight to those who have no opportunity to get out and mix with kids. Watch the bulletin for specifics on how to get involved with this team.
Right now, dial the summer Friday night beach gatherings into your calendar, June17, July 22, and August 12. You won’t find a finer opportunity to connect with other Sanctuary families for an informal evening of encouragement and fun around a great picnic dinner.
Join us for a church campus workday on August 13th. We always have jobs that bring people together, and we have fun tackling projects that include workers of every age and ability.
All this to say that there are plenty of great ways to stay connected through the summer. The above are just a few suggestions to get you started. It will, no doubt, take a little more effort on your part to get involved, but the availability of ministry opportunities is as wide open as you are willing to get involved. Before you know it we’ll be getting ready for another good season of Half Time. But until then let’s keep looking for other ways to be an encouragement to our brothers and sisters and to keep growing in Christ in the Sanctuary family.
Lookin’ forward to a little friendly relaxin’ and growin’ with you this summer,
